چکیده

Characteristic medial damage occurs in the distal lenticulostriate arteries in patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage. Medical changes were studied in the proximal and distal lenticulostriate arteries and cortical circumflex arterioles. Additionally, intramyocardial coronary, gastric submucosal and renal interlobular arterioles were examined in hypertensive patients. Hypertensive medial damage consisted of irregular atrophy and paucity of smooth muscle with accumulation of nonfatty debris and basement membranes. These changes were diffuse, extensive and not uniform, and were unrelated to atherosclerosis or bifurcation. By electron microscopic morphometry smooth muscle occupied 28% of the media in the distal lenticulostriate arteries of hypertensive patients as compared with 80% in controls. The proximal lenticulostriate and cortical branches in hypertensive patients showed values higher than 50%, as did the coronary, gastric and renal arterioles. Massive primary hemorrhages are prevalent in the area supplied by the distal lenticulostriate artery, 150-660 microns in diameter. Fibrinoid necrosis and microaneurysm occur in more peripheral arterioles, 70-200 microns. Thus, hypertensive medial damage with significant reduction of the smooth muscle area to less than 50% of the total media is viewed as an additional important factor which predisposes to sudden arterial rupture and massive cerebral hemorrhage.

Ultrastructural studies of cerebral arteries and collateral vessels in moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease was originally defined as a characteristic syndrome of recurrent headaches, occlusion of the distal internal carotid arteries and the foggy (moyamoya) clusters of collateral vessels at the base of the brain as demonstrated by cerebral angiography. The etiology is unknown and pathobiology is poorly understood. We examined the intracranial arteries in 3 patients to demonstrate ch...

Hypertension correlates with lenticulostriate arteries visualized by 7T magnetic resonance angiography.

Hypertension, a major risk factor for stroke, is associated with altered arterial anatomy and function; however, the limited resolution of current imaging techniques has restricted the in vivo study of microvascular changes in the brain. In this report, we quantitatively examined the lenticulostriate arteries in hypertensive patients using ultrahigh-field 7T MRI. We compared the number of stems...

Ultrastructural characteristics of occluded perforating arteries in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats.

We studied ultrastructurally cerebral perforating arteries in 60 stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP), which were sequentially killed at 4-52 weeks of age before showing symptoms of stroke. Another 24 SHRSP were killed soon after they showed symptoms of cerebral infarction. The initial vascular lesions observed in the asymptomatic group included focal cytoplasmic necrosis in the...

Confabulations after Bilateral Consecutive Strokes of the Lenticulostriate Arteries

We describe the case of a 75-year-old woman who manifested persistent confabulations after two consecutive strokes encompassing the area of the lenticulostriate arteries territory on both hemispheres. Findings reported on this rare clinical syndrome suggest that fantastic confabulations and delusional thoughts may arise after bilateral damage of subcortical nonthalamic structures.

A Survey on Morphometry and Topography of Nutrient Foramina and Measurement of Other Anthropometric Parameters in Human Femora and Tibiae: A Descriptive Study

Background and Objectives: Measuring the dimensions of bones is essential from the perspective of surgery related to bones and joints. The position of the nutrient foramen and the bones' dimensions vary in different populations. The aim of this study was to determine some anthropometric dimensions and topography of nutrient foramina in the femora and tibiae. Materials and Methods: In this desc...
